Are you getting ready for a safari but feeling uncertain about what to pack?
Here’s a list of must-have items for your Safari

Lightweight Casual Clothing
Leave the high heels and fancy outfits behind – when you're out in the bush, comfort is key. Opt for light, breathable layers that you won’t mind getting a bit dirty, making them ideal for game drives, walks, and hikes. However, feel free to pack something a bit more polished for drinks and dinner, especially if you're visiting for a special occasion.
Khakis / Loose Trousers: Avoid jeans, as they can be heavy and overly warm, particularly in the hot and humid climate of the bush. Instead, choose lighter pants that offer both comfort and a cooler experience. Lighter colors will help keep you cool, while a relaxed fit enhances comfort. Go for neutral tones like Khaki, tan, olive, brown, and earthy greens are best because they help you blend in with the bush. A
Fleece or Warm Jumper: Regardless of the season you choose to visit, it’s wise to bring a long-sleeve fleece or jumper. Mornings and evenings can be cool or even quite chilly. If you’re visiting during the winter months (May, June, July), be prepared for temperatures dropping between 2-7°C in the early hours and late at night.
Swimming Costume: Don't forget to pack a couple of swim costumes / swim shorts for leisurely lounging during the hot afternoons. Opt for quick-drying materials to ensure comfort after a refreshing dip, and consider packing a cover-up or sarong for transitioning between the pool and other activities.
A Cooling Towel: When the heat is intense, a cooling towel can be invaluable. These towels remain cool for hours when wet and assist in regulating body temperature. They’re perfect for draping around your neck or over your head on hot days. Most cooling towels are lightweight and compact, making them convenient to pack and carry.
Shoes
Make sure to pack comfortable, closed-toe shoes. Remember, this is Africa; many bushes have thorns, and you may encounter insects as well. Also, take a pair of sandals for the daytime (or use your flip-flops if you prefer).

Safari Hat & Sunglasses
The African sun can be fierce, even in winter, so you must be well protected. Pack a wide-brimmed safari hat - this vital accessory not only shields your face, neck, and ears from harmful UV rays but also helps maintain your cool. Choose a hat made from breathable, quick-drying fabric for ultimate comfort.
Additionally, protect yourself from the intense African sun by pairing your hat with UV-protective sunglasses. These will safeguard your eyes and face from the sun's glare, ensuring your comfort during all your adventures.
Sunscreen
Never underestimate the danger of the sun, it’s crucial to wear protection whenever you are adventuring outdoors, even in winter. Cover any exposed area of skin with a decent, long-lasting sunblock – SPF 50 works best.
Insect Repellent
Essential for any trip to the bush, insect repellent will help keep pesky mosquitoes and other insects at bay. Choose products that are effective and suitable for your skin type, and remember to reapply regularly

Camera
While it's true that most of us carry smartphones equipped with impressive cameras these days, if you're passionate about photography or considering investing in a dedicated camera, Bush is an excellent option for capturing stunning landscapes and vibrant wildlife. Celebrated for its breathtaking natural scenery, Bush offers countless opportunities for photographers to refine their craft. A good camera empowers you to fully realise your creative vision and seise those unforgettable moments with remarkable clarity and detail.
Binoculars
Whether you’re a passionate birdwatcher, seeking to enhance your game-viewing adventures, or simply want to navigate the wilderness with greater confidence, binoculars are essential. You'll be the first to catch a glimpse of the Bateleur or a leopard in the distance! Most outdoor equipment stores offer a variety of binoculars for sale – explore options that align with your needs and budget.
A powerful torch A reliable torch or headlamp is essential for navigating in low-light conditions or during nighttime. LED models are typically the best choice due to their brightness and long battery life. Consider packing extra batteries or a rechargeable model with a portable power bank. A headlamp can be particularly useful as it leaves your hands free for other tasks.
Power Adapters for South Africa
In South Africa, the electricity supply is 220V, and the most common plug types are 3-prong (type M) and 2-pin (type C). Ensure you bring a travel adapter to charge your devices, as most smartphones only require an adapter rather than a voltage converter. Additionally, USB-C and USB-A sockets are typically accessible, so just remember to pack your cables.
Swiss Army Knife
A Swiss Army Knife is an essential companion for any outdoor excursion. It proves invaluable for a range of tasks you may face in the wilderness! Whether you need to open cans and bottles, cut rope, or fix equipment, this tool has you covered. Choose a model that offers a well-rounded assortment of tools, including a knife, can opener, screwdriver, and scissors.
